In Jack Johnson's song GONE he sings, "Look at all your fancy clothes, but these can keep us warm just like those...cars and phones and diamond rings - bling bling..." When we are honest with ourselves aren't these the things we crave? But why? Why do we buy things we do not want, to impress people we do not like? (Gish) Why do we crave things we neither need nor enjoy? Our consumer culture is crazy. The mass media has convinced you and me that to be out of step with fashion is to be out of step with reality (Foster), and this is a sick notion but we buy into it. We buy into the fact that we are what we own. We find our selfworth in our material possessions and some things have got to change.
This summer we have been discussing THE WAY, and I believe simplicity is a better way to live. Simplicity brings about freedom, freedom you and I desperately need. But simplicity is more then freeing ourselves from our possessions - it is an inward reality that results in an outward life-style (Foster). And we must start inwardly. So I ask the question, "What do you Seek?"
